
Dr. William P. Hummel and Dr. Michael Kettel are nationally recognized experts in IVF, reproductive endocrinology, and infertility. Both have been nominated by Woodward/White "Best Doctors in America" and "Best Doctors in San Diego" by their peer physicians. After completing fellowships in this field, both have focused their clinical practice on the diagnosis and treatment of infertility.
After completing his Fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. William Hummel founded the San Diego Fertility Center. He received his medical education at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and performed his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at Stanford University Medical Center.
Board certified since 1990, his specialized experience using all aspects of assisted reproductive technology has assisted thousands of couples in achieving their dreams. Under Dr. Hummel's leadership, the center pioneered the technology of blastocyst embryo transfer, which heightens the success of reproductive treatment while lowering the risk of multiple births. Dr. Hummel also pioneered egg donation IVF in San Diego, which in combination with blastocyst embryo transfer, increases pregnancy rates. The center's success rates exceed the national average, and it has been recognized by the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology.
Dr. Hummel frequently contributes to both national and international infertility and IVF publications and was recognized as one of the "Best Doctors in America." He is a member of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine. In addition to his interest in assisted reproduction, he has expertise in operative laparoscopy, hysteroscopy, and a special interest in the treatment of endometriosis.
Michael Kettel graduated with honors from the University of Arizona. He joined the San Diego Fertility Center in 1996 after serving as the Director of Infertility Services and as a member of the academic faculty at the University of California, San Diego for more than 6 years. Following his residency in Obstetrics & Gynecology at the University of Utah, he completed a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology at the University of California, San Diego.
Dr. Kettel is board certified in Reproductive Endocrinology and Obstetrics & Gynecology. He is a Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Kettel is also certified as a High Complexity Laboratory Director with additional expertise in Human Embryology and Andrology. This unique certification places him among very few fertility physicians who have sought out this additional training and expertise. He is a member of the Society of Reproductive Surgeons, the Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility, the Society of Assisted Reproductive Technology and the American Society of Reproductive Medicine.
He has received many academic and teaching awards and has published over 100 scientific papers, articles and book chapters on the treatment of endometriosis, uterine fibroids and ovulatory disorders that lead to infertility and is an Associate Clinical Professor at UCSD. He has received over $1,000,000 in support for research grants and has been actively involved in clinical research trials exploring new and novel ways to enhance success in IVF, ovulation induction and adhesion prevention. His recent interest lies in the area of preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). Dr. Kettel pioneered this technology in the San Diego area and the first PGD case was performed at the San Diego Fertility Center in May 200l!!
Authored over 100 research papers, and book chapters on endometriosis, uterine fibroids, ovulatory disorders, and infertility.
